Locust swarms in Madagascar.

Severe locust plagues can devastate cropping systems. Here in Madagascar, maize crops, rice crops and grazing lands were badly impacted after several swarms swept across the island in 2013. Locusts are a rich protein source and are eaten either fried or dried. Entomophagy (the practice of eating insects) has always been a part of human diets. Insects are eaten in times of food scarcity or because of their palatability and their established place in local food cultures.
